Acid dyes are anionic organic dyes which contain sulfate groups that are used with organic cations such as alum to fix them to the surface of fibers. They are mostly used to dye natural protein, synthetic poly amide and to a small extent acrylics and blends of these fibers. They are mainly used to dye wool, not cotton fabrics.

Acid dyes, named for their application under acid conditions, are very easy to apply, and have a wide range of colours, depending on dye selection, and have good colour-fastness properties. The inclusive term ‘acid dyes’ includes diverse individual dye classes. Metal complex dyes are also considered as acid dyes. Chrome dyes are also included in the categories of acid dyes. Acid dyes are commonly anionic in nature, and these dyes are mostly suitable for wool, silk, poly amide, and modified acrylics. Acid dye is a dye that is normally applied to a textile at low PH.

Acid dyes also used as food colorants, and some used to stain organelles in the medical field. Acid dyes are not suitable for cotton cellulose. These dyes blend with the fiber by hydrogen bonds, van der walls forces or through ionic linkages. Acid dyes have  a better fastness properties than some of the other dyes like Levelling acid dyes, and also have reasonable wet fastness.
